First, the word “try” stands out. In my experience, saying I will "try" something often sets a tone of uncertainty. Instead, I’ve learned to replace this with a firm commitment. When I say, “I will,” I align my actions with my intentions, creating a more positive and proactive mindset.
Another critical term to avoid is “but”. This seemingly innocuous word serves as a barrier, often negating our positive affirmations. For example, saying, “I want to succeed, but…” introduces doubt and sets a limit on my potential.
Over the years, I’ve trained myself to eliminate such qualifiers from my vocabulary. Instead, embracing “and” encourages a more expansive vision, allowing me to acknowledge challenges while remaining focused on my goals.

Canfield also highlights words like “never” and “always” as detrimental to our mindset. In my decade-long journey, I’ve realized that using absolutes can paint an unrealistic picture of my experiences. By consciously molding these thoughts into more constructive dialogues, I have noticed a shift in my mindset. Instead of looking at failure, I look at it as a valuable lesson.
