Why Swami Vivekananda Birthday Celebrate as National Youth Day

Every year 12 January is celebrated as National Youth Day all over India, it is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. This day reflects the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda that how youth should become participants in the modern world while maintaining their values.

It is worth noting that on this occasion, the 25th National Youth Festival is being organized in Pondicherry.

 

History of National Youth Day

The first National Youth Day was celebrated on 12 January 1985; the main idea behind this day is to create a better future for the country by inspiring the youth and spreading the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda. Various types of events are organized on this occasion in schools and colleges etc. across the country.

 

Who was Swami Vivekananda?

Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863; his childhood name was Narendranath Dutt. He was a great spiritual leader, social reformer, and youth icon. He joined the Brahmo Samaj dedicated to ending child marriage and illiteracy and spreading education among women and backward castes.

Swami Vivekananda was the chief disciple of the famous 19th-century yogi Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who founded the Ramakrishna Math in present-day Kolkata. Swami Vivekananda also started a worldwide spiritual movement 'Ramakrishna Mission' based on ancient Hindu philosophy.

He was instrumental in reviving modern Hinduism and with a sense of nationalism during the colonial period. Swami Vivekananda is best remembered for his speech at the World Religious Assembly in Chicago, the USA in 1893 when he introduced Hinduism to the Western world.

His writings and teachings also influenced many nationalist leaders of the country fighting against colonial rule. Subhashchandra Bose called him the 'builder of modern India'. Vivekananda firmly believed that youth can change the fate of the country with their dedication, dedication, and spiritual power. Swami Vivekananda died on July 4, 1902.
