News: Switzerland involved
in the SKA observatory project
Recently
Switzerland has joined the SKA observatory project. With this, it has become
the eighth country to join the intergovernmental founding nations of this
observatory.
These
founding countries will support the construction of the SKAO (Square Kilometer
Array Observatory) to be built in Australia and South Africa.
Significantly,
SKAO is a project to build the world's largest radio telescope; this radio
telescope can detect invisible gases in the universe and can also give
information about the areas surrounded by cosmic dust of space.
This
telescope will also enable astronomers to observe cosmic expansion. This
observatory will enable astronomers to survey the entire sky faster than any
system currently in existence.
The
operation, maintenance, and construction of this telescope will be overseen by
SKAO. The estimated cost of SKAO's construction by 2021–2029 is approximately
EUR 2 billion.
SKAO is a
new intergovernmental organization dedicated to radio astronomy, with SKAO
headquartered in the United Kingdom.
Switzerland
joins SKAO's three host countries as founding member countries, with Italy, the
Netherlands, Portugal, France, and China as its other member states.
The three
host countries of SKAO are the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa.
