Vehicle manufacturers to start manufacturing flex-fuel vehicles in India

News:

Transport and Roadways Minister Shree Nitin Gadkari has asked the vehicle manufacturers to start manufacturing flex-fuel vehicles based on BS-VI standards in the next 6 months.

To reduce dependence on petroleum-based fuels, emphasis is also being laid on adopting flex-fuel vehicles.

What is Flex Fuel Vehicle (FFV)?

The full name of FFV is Flexible Fuel Vehicle, and it was invented in 1980.

Engines of this vehicle can use multiple fuels at the same time, whereas currently powered vehicles can use only one fuel at a time like CNG, Diesel, or Petrol.

Petrol and gasoline or ethanol and a mixture of both can be used as fuel in such vehicles.

The fuel system of these vehicles consists of a small processor, which detects the fuel mixture and automatically adjusts the ignition timing and the mixture of air and fuel.

The main advantage of this technology is that it can significantly reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Currently, countries like Brazil and the United States are leading the way in using this technology.

What is FFV-SHEV?

Its full name is Flex Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle, this vehicle works on 'Hybrid Electric Technology' with multiple fuels.

It is capable of working on a completely isolated electric battery or other fuel such as petrol or electric battery only.

Whereas normal hybrid vehicles can run on electric batteries and fuel simultaneously.

What is BS-VI?

These standards are also called Bharat Stage Emission Standards.

They were established by the Government of India in the year 2000.

This standard regulates the amount of air pollution emitted from the engine of motor vehicles.

The responsibility of implementation of these standards mainly lies with the Central Pollution Control Board, which works under the Ministry of Forest and Environment.

The amount of sulfur in the emissions of BS-VI vehicles will be 10 parts per million, while in BS-IV this amount is 50 parts per million.

Thus, the amount of sulfur in the emissions of BS-VI vehicles will be reduced to 5 times as compared to BS-IV.

Also, the number of oxides of nitrogen will be reduced by about 25% in petrol vehicles and by about 68% in diesel vehicles.
