Some Important Facts about Sardar Patel:
Sardar Patel
was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was a lawyer by profession
before joining politics.
It is a
matter of pride that his birthday, 31 October, is celebrated as 'National Unity
Day.'
His full
name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, but he became famous as Sardar Patel.
He was a
prominent presence in all the protests and satyagraha against the British.
He was given
the title of 'Sardar' for his role during the Bardoli Satyagrahas in the year
1928.
Sardar Patel
was one of India's most important figures and was politically associated with
the Congress party.
In the year
1931, he presided over the Karachi session of the Congress.
Sardar
Patel, who was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, has
been called the 'Iron Man of India'.
He has the
credit of merging more than 560 princely states with the Union of India after
independence.
He died on 15 December 1950 in Bombay (Mumbai).
